When I first joined APO, I thought the volunteering aspect would be a chore, something I would put up with so I could enjoy the other aspects, like making friends and gaining leadership experience. One of the big moments that changed my feelings was when I helped out with the Bike Project, a local second-hand bike store that also teaches members of the community about bikes, how to repair and even build them themselves. Specifically, I helped out with their annual “Light the Night” event, which provides and installs free lights on the bike of anyone who brings it. I love how this event gave me the opportunity to use my strengths, most of all being very outgoing and not afraid to approach people walking by and talk to them about the importance of taking the correct measures for safety. What touched me most though was as the event was winding down, one of the organizers of the event approached me and said how great the APO volunteers were, how in the past people hadn’t been very enthusiastic and slacked off. Her compliment gave me a sense of empowerment, even as a pledge, to make positive change in the chapter, and stir a real enthusiasm for service.
