When volunteers arrive at Books to Prisoners they are separated into two groups. Each group gets to work on meaningful tasks like replying to letters, logging orders, and packing. The library has a wide variety of genres and authors to provide the best fit book to each prisoner writing in.
Books to Prisoners is a meaningful project where volunteers can makes a difference in the lives of one of the prisoners. Most jails don't have libraries or they are shut down, so it is hard for inmates to find reading materials. Trying to find the right book can be both challenging and fun. Volunteers have to think hard about the best books because inmates can only write in a certain amount of times. Books to prisoners was established in 2004 and is a non-profit that aims to promote literacy.

What do we do at this event?
At the canteen run, brothers will meet the driver at salvation army and drive to about 6 designated spots to give out food, blankets, clothes, and hygiene supplies to homeless people (guests) in the area. Both homeless shelters in town have recently closed so they are very busy.
At the canteen run you will directly see how your help affects the community. You will be feeding a veteran or clothing a child. Just listening to their stories can give these folks hope. Helping them find resources to improve their situation also helps immensely.

The library typically needs help with cleaning and organizing. Normally volunteers will help with vacuuming, restocking books, cleaning shelves, and just random projects the library needs help with.
The library is used so frequently by the community. It is a great amenity that makes a big difference in the community. Because of this, it feels great to be able to give back to the community by helping out the library in any way they need.

This library hosts an after school program each Wednesday. Volunteers will typically come to the library, help set up the craft or project, get the kids organized, and then help out with the kids and aid them with the craft or activity.
It feels great to be able to give back to the community in this way. The kids love to hang out with you more than they love the activities. It’s so great to hang out with the kids and have fun with them.

ETC Coffeehouse is a coffeehouse that fights hunger! ETC Coffeehouse is a place where students can drink fair-trade coffee, hang out with friends, and fight hunger. ETC is completely volunteer run (that is what APO volunteers are there for) and is donation based (so there’s no set price for the coffee). As a volunteer, your duties will be to make coffee, clean up used dishes, keep the general area clean (so organizing chairs and wiping down counters), and socializing with guests of the coffeehouse!
APO loves to serve at ETC Coffeehouse because without APO volunteers, this place would not exist. Because of our service, ETC is able to be open five days a week from 9am-9pm. Donations given to ETC go directly to the Wesley Evening Food Pantry. So as a volunteer you are working to make money that will go towards fighting hunger!

Highly sustainable crafting opportunity! The IDEA store focuses on using every piece of an object in their crafts; tasks range from taking apart trophies, organizing ribbon, making holiday bags, and many, many other tasks you would never have thought to do! Volunteers sit at one large table so this task is particularly fun with its opportunity for loose and casual discussion, music playing, and relaxing environment.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association Office helps provide individuals suffering from muscular dystrophy with various services, such as caregivers, educational resources, emergency care, and equipment assistance. Volunteers can be expected to help with various office tasks such as light filing, shredding, etc. By helping with these tasks, the process for individuals to receive these services is greatly expedited.
Our brothers love helping out the MDA office by doing various tasks around the office. We love knowing we indirectly helped individuals who will benefit from the services that MDA provides.

What is the event? What will the volunteers do there?
APO helps with the large-scaled annual events that occur inside the Orpheum Theatre. Depending on the volunteer shift and upcoming special events, volunteers will help with set up, tear down, or staffing various children’s activities.
The Orpheum is well-known for its science-themed special events such as the Kids Building Fair, Halloween Events, Parade of Lights, Snow Globe, LEGO Day, and other various annual events. Being able to volunteer at a place where kids are able to “become engaged and educated through the exploration of science and the arts”, is meaningful through its significant impact on the Champaign-Urbana community. APO loves helping out in a creative and fun environment, like the Orpheum, where each event is unique and different from one another.

The event consists of taking care of and trying to find homes for cats that belong to the Prarieland Shelter. The shelter houses many cats and tries its best to find loving and caring homes for all of them. Where APO comes in, is taking care of the cats that are brought to the PetSmart in Champaign. We need to clean the cats’ cages, pick up litter, and play and socialize with them. The most important thing, however, is to let people come into the cat room to play and socialize with cats. Hopefully, the end up deciding to take one home!
Being able to come into PetSmart and clean up after the cats truly is a great help not only to the people of the Prarieland Shelter, but to the people of PetSmart as well. The workers at PetSmart are not able to clean up after the cats due to the jobs that they are already required to do, and the Prarieland shelter covers so many places that helping them take care of cats at this one place makes their lives a lot easier. So we really are making an impact in the lives of people that are trying to do good. Lastly, we are making a huge difference for all of the cats themselves!

Volunteers help tutor local students in the Urbana area ranging from K-9. The students are instructed to finish their homework or find a worksheet that that is at their grade level. After, the volunteers supervise a craft or an activity with the students. The last 30-45 minutes are reserved for free time. This usually will include playing games or sports outside or staying inside to play board games or puzzles.
Our brothers love to spend time hanging out with these really amazing kids and it is a very fulfilling event!

Swann School is part of Swann Special Care Residential Center. The center has residents of all ages who have severe mental and physical disabilities. Many of them are in wheelchairs and nonverbal. Having experience with people with special needs is helpful, but not necessary. The school is separate from the residential center and is right off of Springfield Ave. The school is split into elementary, middle, and high school rooms. Volunteers are split into each of the rooms and the main purpose is to interact with the kids whether that is reading to them or throwing a ball back and forth.
Many of the kids don’t get individualized attention due to the number of residents. Volunteering at Swann School allows them to interact with different people. It also helps out the Swann employees and gives them a break throughout their hectic days. And the kids love it so much. They literally bounce out of their chairs. While many of them are nonverbal, by attending repeatedly volunteers can start to develop a better understanding of how the students communicate. It is a wonderful place with wonderful staff and wonderful students.

UniPlace hosts a weekly free, hot meal to members of the community and students. You will help prepare this meal and set up the area where people will be served tomorrow.
Our brothers love being able to complete an entire dinner for the community of UIUC and Champaign-Urbana. They tackle everything from cooking, serving, cleaning and interacting. Also seeing people enjoy and appreciate the dinner is very rewarding. They often get a free meal as well!
